
Rick McVey (Writer/Director/Producer), a member of the Resident Acting Company at Barter Theater, has worked for over thirty years in broadcast, stage and film. While FREEDOM is his debut as a film director he has directed and produced many broadcast and stage productions including Bus Stop, The Miracle Worker, South Pacific, Graceland and others. As an actor he has appeared in scores of productions, including the films The Wraith and Crimson Fold and on the stage as George Bailey (It’s a Wonderful Life), Uncle Peck (How I Learned to Drive), Pastor Bob (Doubting Thomas), John Proctor (The Crucible) and others.
Mike Ostroski (Captain Theodore Allen/Associate Producer) is an actor, director, and playwright making his film debut in Freedom (Summer 2007) while spending his eighth season as a member of the Resident Acting Company of the historic Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia (www.bartertheatre.com). To date, Mike has performed in 56 productions at The Barter in roles such as Sir Percy Blakeney (The Scarlet Pimpernel), Sam Peliczowski (Fully Committed), Jamie Wellerstein (The Last Five Years), Chief Bromden (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest), Will Parker (Oklahoma!), Nick Bottom (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Charles Condomine (Blithe Spirit), Jesus (Godspell), Whizzer (Falsettos), and Robert (Betrayal). Originally from Ashland, Ohio, Mike has studied at the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music for Musical Theatre, Miami University, Cambridge University, and London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. John Hedges (Lieut. A.A. Carr) spent ten seasons as a Resident Actor at the historic Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia performing in over 60 shows. Elsewhere, John has been seen at Actors Theatre of Louisville, Indiana Repertory Theatre, Kentucky Shakespeare Festival, Music Theatre of Louisville and appeared opposite Academy Award winner Olympia Dukakis in The Cherry Orchard at the American Stage Festival. New York appearances include The Tempest, Peer Gynt, The Changeling and the world premiere of Out on Hooks. Other film work includes leading roles in The Homecoming (New Dominion Pictures) and The Crimson Fold (Premier Productions). Mr. Hedges received his training from the Professional Theatre Training Program at the University of Delaware, the National Shakespeare Conservatory and HB Studio in New York.
Frank Green (Daniel Adams), a native of Washington, D.C., is in his third year as a member of the Resident Acting Company at Barter Theatre and has performed is roles ranging from Mr. Toad in The Wind and the Willows, Caliban in The Tempest, Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, King Henry in Henry V, Sgt. Stemming in Murderer, Clarence in It’s A Wonderful Life, Lester in Long Shadow, Aarvid in Don’t Hug Me!, and Edmund in Lear. His other film work includes leading roles in The Crimson Fold (Premier Productions).
Eugene Wolf (Gen. W.E. “Grumble” Jones) is currently a member of the Barter Theatre Acting Company. For sixteen years he was an ensemble member of Johnson City's community-based professional theatre The Road Company. For twelve years he was a member of Sugar Hill recording artists Brother Boys. Films include: The Curse, Box of Moonlight and Freedom. Television: Lost Highway (BBC country music documentary) and Will The Circle Be Unbroken (PBS, American Experience.)
John Hardy (Associate Producer/A.R. Jones) Artistic or Associate Director of The B Street Theatre/Fantasy Theatre in Sacramento, The Lincoln Theatre in Stockton, CA, The Alabama Story Theatre, The First Light Theatre, The Barter Theatre and The Brooklyn Repertory Theatre. As a professional actor he has played many of the great roles: Hamlet; MacBeth; Oberon in A Midsummer Night’s Dream; Tom in The Glass Menagerie; George in Of Mice and Men; Matt Friedman in Talley’s Folly and others. Joined Actors Equity in 1983 when he was cast in an Off-Broadway production of A Christmas Carol. As a playwright he has had over fifteen of his plays produced by professional theatres. He has directed more than eighty professional productions including Romeo and Juliet; A Midsummer Night’s Dream; One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest; MacBeth; Amadeus.
Katy Brown (Eliza Hamilton) has been working for the last nine years at Barter Theatre, the State Theatre of Virginia, where she is now Associate Director and the Artistic Director of the Barter Players. Her onstage work at Barter has included Phebe in As You Like It, Rose of Sharon in The Grapes of Wrath, Olivia in Twelfth Night, Juliet in the touring production of Romeo and Juliet, and Suzanne in Picasso at the Lapin Agile. Other regional work has included Thomasina in Arcadia and Jeanette in A Child Shall Lead. She also played Monique in the Fat Dragon Productions film Cleansing. Katy makes her living primarily as a director; representative works include Hamlet, The Laramie Project, The Quiltmaker, A Thousand Cranes, and Doubting Thomas.
Ben Mackel (Abraham Hamilton) has appeared in dozens of stage productions including Barter Theatre productions of Gypsy (Tulsa), The Lion In Winter (Philip), Singin in the Rain (Young Cosmo), Scarlet Pimpernel (Elton), Feeding on Mulberry Leaves (Jeb) and Mother Courage (Swiss Cheese). He also appeared as Ichabod in the Flat Rock Playhouse production of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Jeffrey in the Main Street Theatre production of Godspell, and Bobby in the Central Piedmont Summer Theatre production of A Chorus Line.
Tom Angland (Col. John Netherland) has been a professional actor for fifteen years. He has performed on the stages of regional theatres across the country and has toured nationally. Favorite theatrical roles include Brick in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Lord Evelyn Oakliegh in Anything Goes, Owen in The Foreigner, Lopakin in The Cherry Orchard, and Angelo in Measure for Measure. Tom has also appeared in numerous commercials and industrial films. Currently he is a member of the resident acting company at Barter Theatre in Abingdon, VA
Melissa Owens (Mrs. Netherland/Art Director) Born in Columbus, OH, raised in Syracuse, NY and most recently a member of Virginia's Barter Theatre Resident Acting Company, Melissa has performed roles ranging from Marguerite in Scarlet Pimpernel, Shelby in Spitfire Grill, Scrooge in Marley's Christmas Carol, and Dr. Joan in Road Where It Curves Away. Her acting career spans more than two decades and includes: Quilters at Human Race in Dayton, OH, Lizzie in Haywire at the Kennedy Center, Emily Dickinson in The Belle of Amherst at Northern Michigan University, Nancy in Oliver at the Hilton Head Playhouse, and Anna in The King and I in Frankfurt, Germany. Melissa has also designed costumes for most of the above-named theatres and others as well. Her training includes an AAS in Clothing Technology and Design from Seattle Central in Seattle, WA, a BA in English Literature and Drama from LeMoyne College in Syracuse, NY, and an MA in Theatre with a creative thesis in Costume Design from Miami University in Oxford, OH.
Bobby Funk (E.W. Washington) is a full professor at East Tennessee State University where he teaches a variety of performance classes, including Acting I, Period Acting Styles, Acting for the Camera I, Stage Movement and The Audition Process. He came to ETSU from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he taught for 11 years. Bobby did his undergraduate work at Western Carolina University, then went on to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York and to receive his MFA Degree in Acting and Directing from UNC-Greensboro. He has worked professionally as an actor and director Off- Broadway and in regional theatres across the country, including Barter Theatre, where he has worked as both an actor and director and has adjudicated the Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights. He is the author of the book, The Audition Process: A Guide for Actors. Bobby has also written a number of plays including, Co. Aytch: Memoirs of a Confederate Soldier, The Dream Continues: The History of the Civil Rights Movement in America, The Brave and the Free, River Rising: TVA and the Town of Butler and Hear That Whistle Blow . . . Erwin Train A Coming which was selected in 1999 to perform at the Kennedy Center as part of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.
Bill Ringel (Confederate Colonel/Technical Consultant) has been a reenactor/historian of the American Civil War for 39 years. Bill currently is the Colonel, Adjutant-General/Chief of Staff, for the Federal Army of the Ohio in NE Tennessee. He does a Living History Impression of Major General George Gordon Meade, US and has participated in several films but ranks "Freedom" as one of the very best films made due to its realistic approach of the 1860's. As a reenactor Bill does either a CSA or US impression as an Officer and does historical research for reenacting units for authenticity purposes
